At Hatch, we get ready to print a job by using Make-readies, which are posters that get stored by the press, to be printed on over and over again (either for registration or impression checking purposes). After a while, there are some pretty amazing (and gorgeous) image and color combinations, and we pull the 'cool' ones out to cut down into postcards. My job on Thursday was to design and print the back side of the postcards.
This is my design for the postcard backs, in the chase on the press. The ink was just whatever was lying around.
The press is completely analog, so I had to pull that lever to ink the type and print, 800 times. This front press is a tiny version of a C&P.
There were some amazing design compositions that happened by pure accident on these make-readies, like the ones above and below.
Today, I was assigned a wedding job (glee!), and their only request was 'ampersands.' Sounds up my alley! The job is a two-color poster, so I wanted to find the biggest ampersand I could to make an 'ampersand collage.' Uh, best day ever? This is me pulling type off the wall:
Oh noes! Someone has spilled white-out on my ampersands! (I actually fell for this when Mary put it on my sketch the other day...)
Today was slightly depressing because it was Laura's last intern day! It's only been three weeks, but I really do like these people a lot. I'm gonna miss Laura, but luckily she lives in Boise, which is closer to Seattle than Nashville is!
